FAMILY CULTURE

Building Family Culture Through Experiences

Family Culture is the unique way a family forms itself in the terms of rules, roles, habits and beliefs. At the HatMaker’s Suitcase, we believe that traditions, routines, and activities help strengthen the culture of families and are dedicated to providing ideas and suggestions to do so.

Traditions

Traditions are a key part of family culture and are a great way to promote unity, inclusion and core values.  We can be deliberate about creating traditions to meet the needs of our current family, or carry forward traditions as a connection to the past.  They can be a daily routine, a weekly event, a holiday celebration, or a special family occasion.

As you engage in traditions in your home, you build culture by answering, “In may family we….”

Routines

Routines are a series of actions that are regularly followed.  They are useful in the family setting to create consistency, set up expectations and create an efficient base.

Families may use a variety of routines: A bedtime routine, a daily expression of gratitude, chores to help with maintaining the household, a routine to help you get out the door on time, or steps to secure the house at night.  Routines are as unique as each family, but they are helpful in providing structure.

Activities/Games

Activities and games are a great way of team building, learning new skills, and modeling responses to others or a group.

While playing, families build their culture by creating a welcoming atmosphere, allowing time for practice of skills, and sharing a common experience.
